GENERAL RULES

SPECIAL NOTICE:  Due to the high amount of requests to compete, the 2010 World Professional Salsa Championships, 2010 World Professional Shine Championships and the 2010 World Youth Salsa Championships are open for anyone to compete, however, because of time restrictions and scheduling, we are limited to the number of competitors that can compete.  Send in your entry forms soon, or you may be left out!

Rules Amended October 08, 2010 and are subject to change by the WSF Rules Committee. 

The World Salsa Federation and its Organizers reserve the right to reduce the advertised prize money for the  World Professional Salsa Championships (L.A., Cuban, New York and Colombian styles),  if less than 6 couples have entered, and less than 6 contestants for the World Professional Salsa Shine Championship.   

The World Salsa Federation and its organizers reserve the right to cancel the World Professional Salsa Championships and the World Youth Salsa Championships if less than 5 couples have entered each of these events, and the World Professional and Youth Salsa Shine Championships if less than 3 contestants have entered.  All prize monies will be by check issued by the World Salsa Federation, Inc. within 60 days or less following the competitions.  These monies will reflect all applicable taxes taken out according to the laws of the United States of America.


  World Undisputed Professional Salsa Championships

All couples from around the World will be invited to compete in this winner take all World Salsa Championship!

       1.         At least one participant of the couple must be at least 18 years old and the other participant no less than 16 years old.  Both must be members of the WSF.

2.         Costumes are permitted and encouraged, but no props are allowed.

3.          Lifts are allowed only in the finals and only during the individual solo performance.  During the quarter finals and semi finals no lifts are allowed.  Drops are allowed anytime.  There are NO solo performances in the quarter finals or semi finals, but only in the final round.

4.        In the quarter finals contestants will dance 3 times and will come out in groups of no more than 12 couples for the first and third round, and no more than 4 couples in the second round.  In the semi finals, the couples will dance 3 times with all the couples on the floor for the first and third round and in groups of three couples for the second round.  Music will be provided by the WSF for the quarter and semi final rounds  Couples will be on the floor for 1 minute 30 seconds for every round of the quarter finals and semi finals.   In the final round, the couples will dance 3 times with music provided by the WSF for the 1st and 3rd time.  The first time all the couples will be on the floor at the same time for 1 minute 30 seconds.  The second time the couples will perform individually for 2 minutes using their own music  to be provided to the WSF in CD format only, (Competitors need to provide two ready-to-be-played CDs. One track per CD. The DJ will not slow down or speed up your music for you.) and the third time all the couples will again be on the floor for a final comparison for a 1 minute 30 seconds.

5.     Music provided by competitors for their individual performance must consist of 80% recognized Salsa and the other 20% must consist of any kind of Latin music.

6.   Any style of Salsa is permitted (Cuban, Colombian, N.Y., L.A., Puerto Rican)

World Professional Salsa Shine Championships

1.       Competitors must be members of the WSF

        2.       There is no discrimination between Male and Female.  This contest is a one-person contest.

        3.       Contestant must be at least 18 years of age

        4.       Costumes are permitted and encouraged, but no props are allowed

        5.       In the preliminary rounds the contestants will dance with music provided by the WSF.   The first time all the contestants will be on the floor at the same time for 1 minute.  The second time the contestants will be on the floor in groups of three at a time for 1 minute and 30 seconds.  The third time all the contestants will again be on the floor for a final comparison for 30 seconds.

        6.       In the final round the contestants will dance 3 times.  The first time all the contestants will be on the floor at the same time for 1 minute with music provided by the WSF.  The second time the contestants will dance individually to their own music provided to the WSF for a minimum of 1 minute and 30 seconds a maximum of 2 minutes in CD format only.  Competitors need to provide two ready-to-be-played CDs. One track per CD. The DJ will not slow down or speed up your music for you.  The third time all the contestants will again be on the floor for a final comparison for one minute with music provided by the WSF.

World Junior Salsa Championships

        1.         Participants must be at least 6 years old but no more than 12 years old by the time of the event and must be a member of the WSF.

2.         Costumes are permitted and encouraged, but no props are allowed.

3.          Lifts are allowed only in the finals and only during the individual performance.  During the quarter finals and semi finals no lifts are allowed.  Drops are allowed anytime.

4.        In the semi-final round the couples will dance 2 times with music provided by the WSF.   The first time all the couples will be on the floor at the same time for 1 minute 30 seconds.  The second time the couples will be on the floor in groups of three at a time for 2 minutes.

        1.         Participants must be at least 13 years old but no more than 17 years old by the time of the event and must be a member of the WSF.

DEFINITIONS

DEFINITION OF LIFTS

A lift is any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time, with the assistance or support of their partner. Under the above definition if both feet are higher than knee level or are off the floor for more than two counts of music then the move shall be determined to be a "lift". Couples who perform lifts in categories where lifts are not allowed may be disqualified, or may be dropped to last place in the final, at the discretion of the Chairman of Judges. 
DEFINITION OF PROPS
A prop is defined as any item that is not part of the regular costume worn by the dancers, and that is not attached to the dancer or their costume for the full duration of the time that they are on the floor.  
DEFINITION OF A COUPLE

A couple is defined as a male and a female.

 

Please identify your CD by putting your name, name of song, artist name, name of record company and author of song and length of each song on the CD.   All music must be given to the DJ at least one hour before your competition, or you will not compete.  This is very important.
