DanceSport DanceSport is the term used to describe competitive ballroom dancing. Ballroom dancing has been recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the DanceSport governing bodies have been waiting in line to get DanceSport officially in the summer games. In the meantime, there are still major championships held around the world where competitors can win various national and world titles. International Style International Style is the type of ballroom dancing that was first standardized in the United Kingdom and has spread through Europe, Asia, and the rest of the world. Officially, there are ten International Style dances divided into two programs: Standard Ballroom (Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep) and Latin-American (Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, Jive). American Style As the name implies, this is the style that is widely popular in the United States. American Style was standardized primarily by franchise dances studios with the social dancer in mind. The dancing is characterized by underarm turns and fancy footwork. Very recently, the style has become competitive on its own, and gaining popularity due to the "Fred & Ginger" style choreography done by advanced competitors in the Smooth dances (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and Viennese Waltz) and a nightclub approach to the Rhythm dances (Cha Cha, Rumba, Swing, Bolero, and Mambo).
